Questions nobody asked

Is this a joke?

Mostly. symfony/emoji does the job with a good old strtr(). We shipped a whole PHP interpreter to your browser to call it.

Does my text go anywhere?

Nowhere. There is no server: PHP runs in this tab, and boots from scratch for every single conversion.

What is it made of?

PHP and ICU, compiled to WebAssembly with Emscripten. The intl extension is there because symfony/emoji needs the \Transliterator class. Only the class: the 30 MB of ICU data stayed home.

Can names go back to emoji?

Yes, but symfony/emoji does not do it: names are ordinary words. We only replace whole words, and the longest name wins: β€œun chat noir” becomes β€œun πŸˆβ€β¬›β€, but β€œun achat” stays a purchase.
